I've been to Korea and their internet service is fantastic. You're dead on with your criticism of the US's system. It is absolutely anti-competitive and sucks the big one. I whore out my work internet and use my MSN $9.95 per month for a few hours at home. Stick it to the man.

You perfectly described AOL with the expensive price, poor service, and representatives in India! Indeed, AOL is terrible, but I'm currently doing alright with Earthlink here in NYC. My roommate and I have their service and pay $30/mo. ($15 each). What would you recommend for internet service?

Honestly, I am not a big fan of Earthlink either, because they issue press releases every few weeks acting like they are the first to invent things other ISPs have been doing for years. BUT, when compared to SBC, Verizon, Time Warner/AOL, Comcast, etc. Earthlink wins out, they don't have a monopoly and they are able to compete on a national scale and make money doing it, for now anyway.

In the long run, supporting independent companies over your local monopoly can only benefit you. In some areas you may pay a little more now, but down the road you won't. If these monopolies are able to maintain their strangle hold, eventually competition will fully die out, it's already on its death bed, and once its gone you can be sure prices will begin sky rocketing.
