HOLY CRAP!! I knew there was something fishy...since when does fast food care? Good thing I never liked Subway to begin with. I think I avoided them just to spite Jared.

I appreciate that. I can't believe more people aren't talking about this. The statue of liberty reference is one thing, but satiring 9/11 is just wrong.

First of all, how the hell they managed to use the promo poster for "Super Size Me" and get away with it (at least for a short period of time) kind of shocks me. But the other picture is just appalling. Who the hell is making the decisions over there? Yeah, this definitely needs to be stopped...Thanks for posting it. I'll be forwarding this for sure.

My mistake, it WAS a promo for the movie. Whatever. I got to learn to read these things more carefully before i comment. OOPS! :)

And see, I started thinking after the initial shock and defensiveness wore off. Like, the first ad was using a photo from a documentary about how damaging fast food is to America. I know that Subway has used that to their advantage - being SO unlike their competitors. But I want to know why they had to target America. Why can't they attack fast food? I'm thinking it's because France is full of SHEISSE!!! Oh, and about the "tower" ad. I think that's stretching it a bit, but it IS pretty rude to have a sandwich crash into a building with poeple running away in terror. For some, the wound of 9/11 runs deep. They should have known better than to run the ad. blah.

Holy Shit! A friend of mine owns two Subways here in town. I must talk to him about this. Germans are pretty anti-American in their thoughts if only on a political level. Have you submitted this to Snopes.com?
-------------------------------
hotcarl - 2004-08-05 12:21:25
Yes, the first ad was a co-branding of the Super-Size Me documentary and Subway. They did pull the ad in response to customer complaints of depicting an overweight Statue of Liberty, implying only Americans are fat. I agree, this ad is not that bad, even though it is in poor taste. The other ad, however, is quite different. One can not neglect the obvious comparisons between 9/11 and it. It implies burgers and fast food are the terrorist killing Americans. Although an interesting concept, it is in very poor taste and makes light of the people who died both in the Twin Tower tragedy and in incidents resulting from the aftermath.

hotcarl - 2004-08-05 12:22:32
Nope, I have not submitted to snopes.com, I don't even know what that is.

http://snopes.com It's a website devoted to investigating urban legends, myths and other such stories. I've found it quite useful, especially for stopping all the crap my mother keeps forwarding to me.

Um, if you were a patriot you might actually know what the twin towers looked like. Or at least that there were only two of them. If that advert is offensive to anyone, it's mocking the millions of german women and children killed by Americans in World War Two. Or the millions of innocent people your dimwitted leaders have bombed since then. Typical American, thinking everything is about you.
-------------------------------
jes - 2004-08-06 12:10:08
hey, contumely, it's an add making fun of Americans and how fat they are, right? wouldn't it follow that Carl (and Anyone else) would think the picture in that arcticl was in refrence to fat americans? Most people don't talk about one nation poorley in a piece of work, then put in a picture depecting another nation just to fuck with the readers. And FYI, the twin towers are surrounded by other buildings. there are only 2 buildings actually falling in that picture. their design does resemble the towers.
-------------------------------
jes - 2004-08-06 12:16:22
and as Americans, it is a fact that everything is abuot us. I'm suprised you didn't know that.
-------------------------------
hotcarl - 2004-08-06 12:22:50
Cuntomely, The world trade center consists of 7 different buildings with two large towers. The ad pictured contains at least 5 buildings with two large towers. 3 of those buildings collapsed, not just the two large ones. I would think that you socialist Europeans and Canadians would at least be able to understand a simple metaphor, but I guess I would be wrong in that assumption.
-------------------------------
hotcarl - 2004-08-06 12:26:04
Oh yeah, and the bombs our leaders dropped, besides facism, socialism, and nazism they never solved anything.

joey - 2004-08-06 12:54:36
have you ever been to europe? see, only americans like americans... you really oughtta know that, I'm american and I dont even like most of us, we ARE stupid, fat and lazy... but those are minor annoyances compared to our voter turn-out rate, our healthcare & education systems AND electoral process. At least they're being superficial and not poking fun of our REAL problems.
-------------------------------
jes - 2004-08-06 13:29:02
What can I say, it's lonley at the top. and I heard our voter rate isn't that bad compared to other countries. Our stats are based on total eligable voters. Europeans base their stats on total registered voters. if we calculated out stats on registered voters, we would look a lot better. and the electorial process is brilliant. assuming you are refering to the electorial college (sp? wrong, probably) it protects the small states from a big state blow out. I will give you healthcare and education.

jes - 2004-08-06 13:30:37
and america is the hardest working nation out there. not called the land of oppurtunity for nothing. our vacation time is laughably small compared to places like Italy and Aulstralia. I will give you that we are fat. Stupid is up for debate.

warcrygirl - 2004-08-06 13:31:54
Subway is an American company. Why wouldn't this be about us? It's a free country: don't like it? Get the fuck out! Can't stand us/our politics/that fact that we're better than you? Stay the fuck home! We have enough immigrants as it is, thank you very much. And don't give me any shit about how we were founded by immigrants, we kicked ass then, too.
